4 Energy Saving Tips

1. Insulation

Lack of, or improper loft insulation can add an extra £200 a year on top of your heating bills.
The Government recommend a minimum insulation depth of 270mm to gain the maximum efficiency. In addition to this, cavity wall insulation can reduce the amount of heat lost by up to 60%.
If you are over 70, receive income support, child benefit or working tax credits, you may be eligible for a free loft insulation grant.
Contact your local council for more information.

2. Appliances on Standby
Switching off appliances at night could reduce your electricity bill by up to 10%. Although new TVs, DVD players and microwaves use less power on standby then older models, considerable savings can be made by simply turning devices off, as it will add up over the course of a year.

3. Boiler/Cooker Maintenance
Keeping your oil-fuelled boiler or cooker well maintained over the summer months will reduce the risk of problems appearing during wintertime, along with ensuring the unit is running at peak efficiency.
To ensure the upkeep of your boiler or cooker, please call our Maintenance department on 01209 821414 where the staff can arrange a one-off service, or set up a yearly service agreement.

4. Freezer Efficiency
Regularly defrosting your freezer, along with keeping it reasonably full, can help lower running costs.
Ice should be kept to less than ¼ of an inch in thickness, and keeping a well stocked fridge or freezer reduces the volume of air inside that needs to be chilled. Most of us would like to keep it full of steak, wine and lobster, but in the real world, a few 2 litre bottles of water (not filled to the brim as they will burst) should be enough to reduce the load on the motor.
