Mitchell and Webber Tanker Competition

A beautifully restored vintage Bedford oil tanker has inspired more than a thousand primary school children from Cornwall, Devon and as far afield as the Highlands of Scotland to put their art and design talents to the test this summer.

Their overwhelming response has given judges an almost impossible job in picking the winners. But now, the enthusiasts behind the restoration - from Cornwall's longest-established oil delivery company Mitchell and Webber - have pleasure in announcing not two but three top prizes in their Tanker Competition.

"It was so difficult - it's taken us two weeks to go through all the entries and the standard was incredibly high," said Mitchell and Webber Director John Weedon. "In the end we've given two prizes for the best colouring of a picture of our Bedford and one prize in the 'design your own tanker' section."

Competition Winners

The talented winners of the colouring competition are, for the under-6s, Ben Seager, 5, from Treleigh Primary School, Redruth and in the under-12s Rebecca Compton, 9, from Truro Prep School. The overall winner of the hotly-contended design competition is Edward Hobbs, 7, from St Marks School, Morwenstow. Each lucky youngster is receiving £100 in vouchers for themselves and £100 each for their schools. Unfortunately, Edward wasn't able to make it to Truro Prep School for the photos.

The Vintage Bedford Oil Tanker

Robert Weedon said, "The 1948 Bedford is very special to us. Our grand-dad Bert Mitchell drove Bedfords on his oil deliveries around the county and so did our dad Roy Weedon. In fact he learned to drive lorries on those vehicles, so they're like part of the family."

The restoration project - a twelve month labour of love - was hailed as "one of the best ever" by international magazine Heritage Commercials. This summer the Bedford took pride of place at Mitchell & Webber's stands both at the Royal Cornwall and Stithians Shows - where it drew hundreds of admirers of all ages.

John Weedon said, "We were so proud of the accolade from Heritage Commercials and we had so much fun restoring the Bedford to its former glory. We thought Cornwall's primary children might enjoy working with it too - and judging by the number of competition entries they obviously did!"
